Keyes Elected to European Academy of Engineering
Columbia Engineering is proud to announce that David E. Keyes has been elected to the European Academy of Engineering’s (EAE) Class of 2026. The 2026 class includes 21 Nobel Laureates, four Turing Laureates, two Fields Medalists, 10 Breakthrough Prizewinners, six Wolf Prizewinners, and eight ENI Awardees. Other Columbia University faculty in the EAE include Julia Hirschberg, Mihalis Yannakakis, and Colin Nuckolls.
Keyes is a professor of Applied Mathematics and Computational Science, Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), as well as an Adjunct Professor in Columbia University’s Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics. His work focuses on the algorithmic interface between parallel computing and numerical analysis, including scalable solvers for partial differential equations, spatial statistics, and machine learning. He has co-created methods and frameworks including Newton-Krylov-Schwarz, pseudo-transient continuation, Additive Schwarz Preconditioned Inexact Newton, Hierarchical Basis Multigrid, and Hierarchical Computations on Manycore Architectures.
Keyes has received numerous honors for his contributions to scientific simulation and high-performance computing, including two Gordon Bell Prizes, the Sidney Fernbach Award, the Euro-Par Career Award, and the SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession. He is a Fellow of SIAM, AMS, and AAAS, and in 2024 was named one of the inaugural 35 “legends” of High Performance Computing by HPCWire.
