COVID-19 Updates for APAM Students

Mar 16 2020

In light of the rapidly changing situation surrounding COVID19, here some important updates for students in the Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics Department.

Student Offices: In an effort to ensure the health and safety of all revolving the COVID-19, we must ask you to work remotely (i.e. off campus) effective immediately unless you are designated essential personnel. Please discuss with your advisor if you are needed to carry out specific essential functions and if so, your advisor will need to request approval from the chair of our Department.

Student Gatherings: Students should avoid all in-person gatherings to the extent possible, and we encourage you to explore the free-trial version of Zoom that all students may activate (for meetings up to 40 minutes). Details can be found here: https://cuit.columbia.edu/video-conferencing

Student Interactions with Advisors and Other Faculty: You will need to be off-campus in these interactions and interact remotely, by Zoom, phone, e-mail and the like.

Thesis Defenses, Thesis Proposals and Oral Exams: All scheduled this defenses, thesis proposals and oral exams will take place over zoom. If your exam has not been scheduled, please contact your advisor and [email protected], our student services team, to get this finalized.

Maintaining Student Visa Status: Associate Provost David Austell, Director of the ISSO, recently issued guidance for international students (reproduced below). ISSO has requested that students contact them directly with any questions at https://isso.columbia.edu/content/contact.

Remote APAM Staffing and Student Support: President Bollinger also advised that all offices at Columbia should transition to remote working arrangements. Our APAM Team will operate remotely until further notice. The staff at APAM is committed to providing you with the same first-class service virtually as in person, so do not hesitate to reach out to me. We are actively exploring ways to maximize the virtual environment for student support.

Columbia Libraries: In the interest of safety for students, faculty, and staff Columbia University Libraries will be closed until further notice. Starting Monday, March 16, please do not return library materials until further notice. This includes mailing items to campus. If your materials are due, please renew using My Account in CLIO. No fines will be charged for overdue or recalled items until further notice. If you encounter full book bins on campus, please do not leave items on top or around the bins.
