2023 Graduate Student Research Symposium

May 08 2023

The first APAM Graduate Student Research Symposium was successfully held on April 21, 2023. There were 17 presentations from graduate students across all three APAM programs: Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, and Materials Science.

We started the day with opening remarks by Prof. Marc Spiegelman, Prof. Katayun Barmak, Prof. Shanyin Tong, and Andrew Bishop, the representative of AMPS (the Association of Applied Math, Applied Physics, Materials Science, and Medical Physics Students). Then, we proceeded to the three presentation sessions: Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, and Materials Science. The three sessions covered a broad range of topics, including nonlinear optics, plasma physics, quantum mechanics, atmospheric sciences, electrochemical energy storage, and nanomaterials. Every presentation was excellent with a few great questions asked by the audience at the end. The faculty judges also provided useful feedback for every participant and decided the winner of each session.

We would like to recognize our four awardees:

Richard Oliver - Best Presentation in Applied Physics
Zirui Xu - Best Presentation in Applied Mathematics
Luke Holtzman - Best Presentation in Materials Science
Yuan Xu - Audience Choice Award

We would like to thank the help of the faculty judges: Prof. Elizabeth Paul, Prof. Carlos Paz-Soldan, Prof. Saskia Mordijck, Prof. Marc Spiegelman, Prof. Michael Weinstein, Prof. Yuan Yang, and Prof. Ismail C. Noyan. We also would like to thank Prof. Katayun Barmak for providing helpful materials to prepare the events.

Overall, the symposium was a great success, highlighting the research being conducted by our graduate students and fostering a sense of intellectual enthusiasm among the department. We hope to see the symposium become a long-standing tradition in the future.

Organized by:
Shanyin Tong, Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics

AMPS symposium organizing committee:
Andrew Bishop, 5th year PhD student in Applied Physics
Julia Hestenes, 4th year PhD student in Materials Science
Han Yong Wunrow, 2nd year PhD student in Applied Mathematics
