Our graduate students work closely with faculty on breakthrough, interdisciplinary research and are active at many of our world-class institutes, centers, and laboratories. And as more of our students pursue practical solutions to real-world problems, we have built up an entrepreneurial ecosystem that is second to none.
Prospective Undergraduate Students
The applied physics, applied mathematics, and materials science programs provide excellent preparation for graduate study or employment in a variety of fields. Using the large number of electives in these programs, students can tailor their programs to fit their personal and career interests. By focusing their technical electives, students can obtain a strong base of knowledge in a specialized area.
Prospective Masters Students
There has never been a better time to gain an advanced degree in engineering. A degree from one of Columbia Engineering’s graduate programs opens up doors in many fields, from research and academia to finance and industry. Students have opportunities to conduct intensive research, work on projects that translate ideas into products, and investigate solutions to the biggest challenges in engineering alongside leading experts in their fields.
Prospective Doctoral Students
The Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics offers graduate study leading to the degrees of Master of Science (M.S.), Doctor of Engineering Science (Eng.Sc.D.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). We are a uniquely-structured department: doctoral students decide on their research advisor over the course of their first year and must join a research group at the end of their second semester; we feature a culture of multidisciplinary research within the department and with other departments; and our cross-cutting themes address key and emerging areas in society, such as energy, environment, and health.
