Apr 11 2025

Simon J. L. Billinge, Professor of Materials Science and Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics at Columbia Engineering, was awarded the 2025 Gregori Aminoff Prize in crystallography by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the prize for his decisive contribution to the further development of the pair distribution function, a tool that is widely used in materials science.

Prof. Billinge, the Aminoff Prize Laureate, presented the lecture, "Watching real materials in action: everything, everywhere, all at once." at the 2025 Gregori Aminoff Prize Symposium on April 2, 2025. As part of the award ceremony, he was presented with a certificate, a medal, and a monetary prize of 120,000 Swedish kronor.

The Gregori Aminoff Prize celebrates outstanding individual achievements in crystallography, particularly those related to the formation and transformation of crystal structures. The Prize recognises a documented individual contribution to the field of crystallography and has been awarded to Swedish and foreign researchers since 1979.
