Speaker: Leigh Winfrey, SUNY Maritime

Title: Fusion Technology: Recent Advances, Continuing Challenges, and Ongoing Research

Abstract: The pace of fundamental science discovery and cutting edge technology development for advancing fusion power technology has accelerated dramatically over the past decade. The world-wide fusion community has made significant progress in understanding the plasma physics needed and in demonstrating technology readiness to support fusion power production. With these advances, and as we move closer to realizing fusion power, come new avenues of investigation in fundamental science, complex engineering, novel technology, safe regulation, and work force development. I will discuss the fusion technology landscape, recent advancements made in fusion energy research, what remains to be done, and touch on work done in my lab, including addressing research on heat loads to plasma facing components and fusion power safety.

Bio: Dr. Leigh Winfrey is Dean of the School of Engineering and ABS Professor of Engineering at SUNY Maritime College. Her expertise is in fusion technology, materials in extreme environments, plasma material interactions, corrosion mitigation in steel, and thin films. Winfrey is editor of is the Editor of Fusion Science and Technology, the leading source of information on peaceful uses of fusion technology and is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Nuclear Society. She received her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and M.S. in physics from North Carolina State University both with minors in nuclear engineering. She received a B.S. in physics and a  B.A. in chemistry and mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
