Applied Mathematics Colloquium with Christophe Josserand, LadHyx
This seminar will take place online, via Zoom. Please contact the APAM Department ahead of time to request the Zoom link.
Speaker: Christophe Josserand, CNRS & Ecole Polytechnique (LadHyx)
Title: "Freezing impacts and flows"
Abstract: When a drop of water hits a cold substrate it can freeze leading to complex ice structures.More generally the interplay between flows and solidification is crucial in different contexts such as aeronautics, metallurgy or geophysical flows. Understanding and modelling such dynamics implies to couple free surface flows with moving boundary where specific conditions are imposed. The impact of drops on cold surfaces will be first investigated in details, from the spreading dynamics to the formation of ice strucures and cracks. Then other configurations, modelling issues and perspectives will be discussed.
Bio: Christophe Josserand is research director at CNRS and professor of fluid mechanics at the hydrodynamics laboratory (LadHyX) of Ecole Polytechnique. His recent works concern the theoretical and numerical modelling of multi-phase flows in close relation with experimental observations. He is also interested in wave turbulence and turbulence models and worked previously on the dynamics of super-fluids/solids.
